Kansas Space Grant Consortium

Call for Proposals

NASA Exploration Senior Design Projects

Objective

The Kansas Space Grant Consortium (KSGC) plans to competitively award funds to support the integration of NASA Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) mission challenges into University experiences (i.e., projects or courses).

Background

ESMD “is a new organization within NASA dedicated to creating a constellation of new capabilities, supporting technologies, and foundational research that enables sustained and affordable human and robotic exploration.” Visit the ESMD web site for additional information, at http://www.exploration.nasa.gov/

The KSGC is sponsoring three separate ESMD related activities. This request for proposals addresses ESMD’s interest in supporting relevant design projects or courses, for senior (or higher) level students.

The NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Education Office lists potential student project topics, at http://education.ksc.nasa.gov/ esmdspacegrant/SrDesignProject.htm Funds for one $5,000 award are available. The period of performance is essentially for the SpringSemester (or until to July 31, 2007). A final report is required (to be submitted by July 2, 2007).

Proposals & Selection

Proposal submissions should comply with the following guidelines:

  • A three (3) page length limit (excluding cover sheet, budget, and related institutional pages)
  • The cover sheet should include the proposal title and all critical contact information
  • Utilize one-inch margins and a 12-point Times New Roman font
  • Due date is December 13, 2006

Proposals will be reviewed by the KSGC Executive Committee, utilizing criteria outlined as follows:

  • Responsiveness to ESMD interests and goals (see ESMD web sites)
  • The extent of multi-institution involvement
  • The interdisciplinary nature of the proposal
  • Additional support from institutional, industrial, or other sources
  • Team membership diversity
  • Evidence of a well-crafted service-learning component to more broadly disseminate the experience to current and future students
  • Team commitment to submit a final report on the role systems engineering played in the interdisciplinary design effort

Submissions

Send proposals by December 13, 2006, in PDF format, via email to:
