Kansas Space Grant Consortium

Call for Proposals

NASA Exploration Engineering Challenge Team Grants

Objective

The Kansas Space Grant Consortium (KSGC) plans to competitively award funds to support student participation in NASA Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) relevant engineering competitions.

Background

ESMD “is a new organization within NASA dedicated to creating a constellation of new capabilities, supporting technologies, and foundational research that enables sustained and affordable human and robotic exploration.” Visit the ESMD web site for additional information, at http://www.exploration.nasa.gov/

The KSGC is sponsoring three separate ESMD related activities. This request for proposals addresses ESMD’s interest in supporting higher education design teams to participate in existing national level ESMD-related engineering design competitions or challenges. Funds for two awards, of $2,500 each, are available. The period of performance is from the day of first award to July 31, 2007. A final report is required (to be submitted by July 2, 2007).

Proposals & Selection

Proposal submissions should comply with the following guidelines:

  • A three (3) page length limit (excluding cover sheet, budget, and related institutional pages)
  • The cover sheet should include the proposal title and all critical contact information
  • Utilize one-inch margins and a 12-point Times New Roman font
  • Due date is December 13, 2006

Proposals will be reviewed by the KSGC Executive Committee, utilizing criteria outlined as follows:

  • The activities relevance with respect to ESMD interests and goals (see ESMD web site)
  • The extent of multi-institution involvement
  • The interdisciplinary nature of the proposal
  • Additional support from institutional, industrial, or other sources
  • Recommendations from faculty mentors
  • Team membership diversity
  • Evidence of a well-crafted service-learning component to more broadly disseminate the experience to current and future students
  • Team commitment to submit a final report on the role systems engineering played in the interdisciplinary design effort

Submissions

Send proposals by December 13, 2006, in PDF format, via email to:
